At a press conference earlier today, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the NYPD will boost resources “directed at protecting African-American churches in the city.” His decision comes after a fatal shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, which is historically black.
De Blasio also held a moment of silence to honor the nine victims. “There are so many people here who hail from South Carolina, and it’s a very, very painful moment for all of us. I want everyone to know there’s no place in New York City for this kind of hatred,” he told told DNAinfo.
In addition, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams held an emergency meeting that included local clergy and NYPD officials. The goal is to make sure no copycat attacks occur in the city, Adams said.
