On Tuesday, a woman had the misfortune of choosing the seat on the BX 11 bus in the Bronx that would soon be invaded by an exploding manhole cover while idling at a stop at 170th Street and Inwood Avenue. According to the New York Daily News, the cover tore through a rubber lining and plywood below the floor. The woman screamed, and the driver assumed the bus had exploded at first. The splintered floor fragments injured the passenger’s leg, and she was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment. A union official told the Daily News, “In my 27 years, between driving and also investigating accidents, this is the first time I’ve seen a manhole cover come through the bottom of the bus.”
