Following their 4–3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in last night’s game six of the American League Championship Series, the scrappy Kansas City Royals will be returning to the World Series for the second consecutive year, this time facing the New York Mets, who won the National League pennant on Wednesday. An aggressive base-running play by Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain broke a 3–3 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Royals closer Wade Davis used a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to come back from a zero-out, runners-at-second-and-third predicament in the ninth to complete the victory. Despite three runs on two homers by Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista, Toronto’s typically potent offense couldn’t match Kansas City’s in the game or the series. Ned Yost’s Royals will now confront Terry Collins’ Mets Tuesday night at the World Series opener in Kansas City. The Royals, who fell to the San Francisco Giants in last year’s seven-game World Series, have not won a Series since 1985, one year before the Mets’ last championship.
