Trump Tries to Humiliate Rubio With Water-Bottle Prank, Fails

Have we overestimated Donald Trump’s trolling prowess? While he realized that the seemingly benign insult “low energy” would drive rival Jeb Bush insane, he’s having trouble finding the same magic with his Marco Rubio digs. Building on his previous claim that Rubio was bizarrely sweaty during the second GOP debate (though everybody looked pretty hot), and the Florida senator’s famous water-bottle gaffe, Trump sent a “care package” consisting of a 24-bottle case of “Trump Ice Natural Spring Water,” two “Make America Great Again” towels, and bumper stickers to Rubio’s office on Monday. According to CNN, there was also a note that read, “Since you’re always sweating, we thought you could use some water. Enjoy!”

First, in case you have never had the misfortune of being thirsty enough to purchase bottled water at a Trump property, yes, Trump Ice is a real thing. (Or was — the product is no longer sold at “specialty food stores and grocery chains nationwide,” despite what Trump’s website claims.) Second, it’s unclear why Trump thought a two-year-old gaffe would make for the perfect zing when Rubio joked about the incident himself at the beginning of the last debate and his line fell flat. That kind of sophomoric prank may work for the likes of Rand Paul, but we expect better from the guy who’s tearing apart the Republican party mainly for the LOLs.
