Elmhurst, Queens, woke up this morning to find thousands of gallons of filthy water sloshing through its streets. The flooding came after a construction crew ruptured a city water main located near Queens Boulevard and Broadway, around 8 a.m, the FDNY told DNAinfo.
The garbage water “consumed bicycles” and “bubbled over sewers” in NBC New York’s vivid account, which depicts Elmhurst as a nightmare Venice, with garbage cans instead of gondolas drifting down its canals.
The MTA has rerouted the Q53 and Q60 bus lines in response to the flood and expects delays on the E, F, M and R lines.
The construction team was at work on a 144-unit apartment building that will include commercial and community space. DNAinfo notes that the developer, 85-15 Queens Blvd. Realty, LLC, was hit with a partial stop-work order back in July because there was no underpinning at the site.
