Former Toronto mayor Rob Ford died on Tuesday morning from a rare, aggressive form of cancer, his family tells the AP. He was 46 and had been transferred to palliative care just a day before. Ford’s high-profile tenure as mayor of Canada’s largest city was cut short in 2014 after a video surfaced of the conservative politician smoking crack. Even before his drug and alcohol abuse became known, he’d been notorious for his brash, sometimes-clownish public persona. Ford was diagnosed with pleomorphic liposarcoma, a rare type of cancer that affects bone, muscle, and fat tissue, in 2014. Ford’s chief of staff, Dan Jacobs, said in a statement that his family will not be answering any questions from the media.
