The city of Cleveland will pay the family of Tamir Rice $6 million, after settling a civil lawsuit Monday. The 12-year-old Rice was fatally shot by police in 2014 while playing with a pellet gun outside a rec center in a Cleveland neighborhood. The family will get a $3 million payout this year, and another $3 million next year, according to NBC News.
As part of the settlement, the city of Cleveland admits no wrongdoing in Rice’s death. The settlement also puts an end to legal action in Rice’s case, as the agreement precludes any additional lawsuits or judgments against the city, reports the New York Times. A probate judge must still give the final okay on the settlement.
Last year, a grand jury declined to bring charges against Officer Timothy Loehmann, the cop who shot and killed Rice. At the time, Cuyahoga County prosecutor Timothy McGinty said the death of Rice had been “a perfect storm of human error.” Last spring, Cleveland’s police force agreed to overhaul and reform police practices under a consent decree with the Justice Department, which stemmed from a nearly two-year investigation into the force’s civil-rights violations that began before Rice’s fatal shooting.
