On Wednesday morning, the normally busy Washington Square Park was closed. By noon, police had put miles of metal barriers in place and news trucks had begun to arrive. By 2 p.m., dozens of spectators had already lined up at the entrance to the Bernie Sanders rally, where gates weren’t scheduled to open until 5 p.m. The pitched battle for New York between Sanders and Hillary Clinton has manifested itself in events and rallies around the city, and on Wednesday night, a crowd of thousands descended upon the park to hear Sanders speak before the state’s primary on April 19. — Claire Landsbaum
