Here’s a terrible subway story from the July 4 weekend: A suspect stole and destroyed a 45-year-old man’s phone at a subway station on the Lower East Side, and later slashed the same straphanger with a box cutter on a platform in Brooklyn. The victim, who uses a cane, told police that the suspect was blocking the turnstile entrance, and the straphanger had asked him to move. The suspect apparently responded by snatching the man’s phone and flinging it onto the floor of the subway station, shattering the screen. The thief raced down to the end of the platform.
