Mets closer Jeurys Familia was arrested in Bergen County on Monday for domestic violence, according to a police report obtained by the Record. In the complaint, police say that Familia caused “bodily injury” to a person who was observed with a scratch on the chest and a bruise on the face. The person’s name was redacted in the copy of the police report published by the Record. Familia, 27, lives in a Fort Lee apartment with his wife and 1-year-old son.
The Mets issued a short statement to the paper that said the team is “monitoring the situation.” In its own statement, MLB said it is “investigating the facts.” Even if the assault charge against Familia is dropped, the star closer could still face punishment from the league. Cubs closer and former Yankee Aroldis Chapman missed the first month of the 2015 season after a domestic-violence call that did not result in an arrest.
Earlier this month, Familia appeared in an anti-domestic violence ad that ends with him saying, “I am not a fan of domestic violence.”
