On Thursday afternoon, Donald Trump announced his decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement. (The Paris Agreement was formally signed and enacted last year and endeavors to limit global warming. Including the United States, 195 nations signed it.) While waiting for Trump to take the microphone, a military band warmed up the crowd with some jazz music. Because nothing says “we’re not worried about melting ice caps and a disintegrating ozone layer” like a few smooth jazz tunes. Immediately, people on Twitter began comparing the scene to another moment in history when a band played to a crowd awaiting — quite literally in this case — their doom: The string orchestra that famously played on the deck on the sinking Titanic.
What we have here, folks, is a good old-fashioned case of “tweet saming.” Congrats to everyone who participated.
