Scenes From Your Election Celebration

Washington Square Park, New York City. Photo: Jared Mauskopf

Minutes after Joe Biden officially won the presidency, the celebrations started in New York City (along with towns and cities across the land). We’re asking New York readers to share photos of their experiences amid this weekend of jubilation (just as we did earlier on the topic of life under lockdown and Election Day). We hope you’ll continue to send in your photos of this momentous occasion, and we’ll keep updating this post with new images as they come in. You can share your photos (and any accompanying stories) with us by emailing them to [email protected]. To share a video you’ve posted on social media, just email the link.

This image obviously got a lot of love from our staff:

“I decided to go to the West Village and when I got there I saw so many happy people dancing to music, crying, laughing, families, women, men, gays, dogs … cars were honking with American flags, everyone wearing masks (which made me happy to see as we are still in a pandemic). The energy in the air was full with joy and so much hope for a better future.”

“I moved to New York City a year ago (originally from Miami, Florida) and I know you already know this, but New York is magic. It’s energy and people and power are unmatched. And after the scenes of devastation and sadness over the last year due to COVID, and the systemic racial injustice that continues to be a huge problem in this country, today New York shined like a damn Phoenix.

Personally, I have had a very hard time with this election. My family in Miami are Cuban and Venezuelan Americans who shudder at the thoughts of socialism — and that agenda had been played for them like a fiddle, breaking my heart because of the lies being fed to a vulnerable community of Latin Americans who they fail to see the bigger picture of morality and love and unity needed in this country. We are extremely close and this has taken its toll, with us nervously watching the election from our own homes texting each other that we’re just ‘watching TV.’

This morning my boyfriend and I, who sleep with our windows open, were woken up by sounds of cheers and honks and could not believe the good news that filled the streets of New York. I opened all our windows and sobbed happy tears. A (somewhat) frequent Citi-biker, I rode down to meet my best friend in Sheep Meadow (plans we made yesterday), and had the most unbelievably joyous and beautiful bike ride I have ever had in New York, accompanied by cheers, pots and pans, honking, music, and sights of people dancing, laughing, hugging, and crying tears of joy. When we arrived in Sheep Meadow on this beautiful fall day, we indulged in waves of cheers from fellow park-goers around us, every 30 minutes. All against a backdrop of a perfect New York day and smiles (and in between sips of celebratory rosè). On our walk back to the subway down at Columbus Circle, a crowd gathered (masks on!) to cheer together with their friends, partners, and children, peacefully and joyously celebrating a new chapter for our country.

It was the most beautiful day and a day I was the most proud to be a New Yorker.”

“It was extremely inspirational to experience this moment in history (especially as a young woman in America) and see people celebrating something for the first time in a very long time.

It’s been dark for a long time, but today was light.”
