It’s been a hell of a month for Matt Gaetz. On November 13, Donald Trump announced the U.S. representative from Florida as his pick for attorney general. Over the next eight days, Gaetz resigned from Congress in an apparent effort to block the release of a House Ethics Committee report involving allegations that he’d had sex with a minor, then withdrew himself from consideration for Trump’s Cabinet, saying he was “unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition.”
By November 22, Gaetz was unemployed save for his new Cameo account. However, he vowed on Charlie Kirk’s podcast, “I’m still gonna be in the fight, but it’s going to be from a new perch.”
Now Gaetz will follow his true calling: becoming an anchor on a Trumpy news network. But despite Gaetz’s frequent appearances on Fox News, and the opening created by Pete Hegseth’s nomination as Defense secretary, it appears he could not find a gig at the nation’s top right-wing news network.
Instead, he has been hired as an anchor on One America News Network. On Tuesday morning, the network announced The Matt Gaetz Show will debut in January. The one-hour political talk show will air every weeknight at 9 p.m. ET.
Gaetz is a big get for the network, which, as the AP put it, “has limited television distribution and generally lives in the shadow of Fox News Channel and Newsmax.” As CNN (brutally) explained, OAN’s personalities “are not well known” and the network often airs “baseless conspiracy theories”:
The network was dealt a significant blow when it was dropped by DirecTV in 2022. Other big distributors have been reluctant to carry its programming, and OAN has urged people to stream the network online instead.
OAN has established itself as perhaps the most extreme of the pro-Trump news outlets.
The little-watched network regularly gives airtime to baseless conspiracy theories that support Trump. The channel even worked closely with Russian operatives on a propaganda-style documentary during Trump’s first impeachment in 2019 over allegations he pressured Ukraine to investigate his political rivals.
Indeed, in his first OAN promo video, Gaetz had to explain how to access his new show. “I would suggest if you’re not in a place where you can access One America News on your normal television station, go get our app,” he said.
So presuming you did not just rush to download the OAN app, you’ll soon be seeing a lot less of Matt Gaetz.
