In a cozy, former parish house let from St. Peter's Episcopal Church, the Atlantic Theater Company stages award-winning revivals, adapted classics, and new work by the likes of Woody Allen and David Mamet, one of its founding members. Mamet taught Practical Aesthetics at NYU alongside William H. Macy in 1986 and urged their students to form a theater troupe. Over one hundred plays later, this 165-seat theater continues to carry the message of unembellished acting through productions like Joe Penhall's 2003 Blue/Orange and 1998 Tony-award winner The Beauty Queen of Leenane. The Atlantic also workshops smaller, more experimental productions in its 98-seat theater a few blocks away at 330 W. 16th St. The two stages, combined with a children's series and the acting school, function as the off-Broadway company’s tools for transmitting truthful stories and supporting artist-driven work. — Lori Cole

Extra
Atlantic for Kids produces two plays a year for young audiences. Atlantic Stage 2, inaugurated in 2006, focuses on bringing new works by emerging and established artists from page to stage.

Classes & Lectures
Atlantic Theater Company Acting School, founded in 1983 and located at 76 Ninth Ave., operates as both a training program for aspiring actors in conjunction with NYU-Tisch, and as a stand-alone professional program.
