Profile

It’s rare that a gallery gets shuttered for overcrowding, but Team Gallery can boast the distinction a result of the mob that spilled into the streets at the opening of it-boy Ryan McGinley’s 2010 series of black and white nude portraits, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. McGinley exemplifies the forward-looking, contemporary sensibility of Team, founded in 1996 by José Freire and Lisa Ruyter (who has since left to focus on her painting career) and also its popularity: The artists on the rosterwhich are all represented by the galleryinclude art star Slater Bradley and the punk stylings of Norweigian black sheep Gardar Eide Einarsson, who was incorporated in the 2008 Whitney Biennial. In 2006 the gallery moved from art-saturated Chelsea to the bustling streets of Soho, into a space with a two-columned entryway and modest, whitewalled rooms. The large front room contains the bulk of exhibitions and is connected through a threshold to a smaller room in back, which then leads to the private viewing area and stairs to administrative offices on the lower level. Here, Freire is the only curator, although he occasionally invites others to mount group exhibitions.
