This Fort Greene wellness center, formerly owned by Cynthia Green, who opened Harlem's first full-service day spa, favors a holistic approach�evident in the counseling menu as well as the occasional post-treatment sermons doled out by the staff. The design nods to African-American heritage with zebra prints, the hum of old jazz tunes, and paintings from local artists; many treatments are tailored to darker skins even as the spa offers less Afrocentric services like reflexology, hot-stone massages, and for couples, a Jacuzzi soak with a side of strawberries and Champagne. In the basement of the Fort Greene outpost, Diane Bailey’s Tendrils salon extends the self care to the scalp. — Molly Noonan
