Profile
This Madison Avenue mainstay has long been the benchmark for sophisticatedbut not stuffydesigner department stores. Even after filing for bankruptcy in 1996 and closing its Chelsea location, Barneys has maintained its haute status as one of the few uptown outposts to attract both Upper East Side old guard and downtown's fashion elite. Displaying cult designers like Proenza Schouler and Miu Miu alongside mainstays like Marc Jacobs and Prada, the nine-floor flagship presents all of its wares with style, whimsy and a strong brand identity. Fred's, the excellent top-floor restaurant and bar, buzzes at lunch with glamoristas flaunting recent purchases and international power-players brokering their next deal. Women make pilgrimages to the extensive beauty and cosmetics floor on the lower level, and men come from all over for the unrivaled selection of distinctive designers like Y-3, as well as the store's own casual label. Barneys industrial style Co-Op department, featuring edgy, funkier styles and accessories for men and women, has spawned three stand-alone stores in the city, as well as scores of imitators.
Sales
The twice-yearly Barney's Warehouse Sale occurs in late February and late August.
Key Departments
Kitchen/TablewareThe store's home accessories department, Chelsea Passage, features a unique array of hard-to-find tabletop designers like La Table Hermes, as well as unique stationery and gifts.
Wedding RingsYou won't find a traditional prong-set ring here, but if you're looking for a cool contemporary style, you'll love their selection from hip designers. Standouts include platinum and gold rings from Brit Malcolm Betts, bold designs by Linda Lee Johnson, vintage-inspired rings by Renee Lewis, and feminine floral ones from Cathy Waterman, a favorite among celebrities.
Men's FormalwearWhether you’re into skinny designer tuxedos or want a classic rig, Barneys has what you’re after. One of the store’s most popular options is a single-breasted, notched-lapel Gucci tux.
Cuff LinksTrue to its reputation, Barneys carries plenty of cuff links that appeal to well-dressed, fashion-conscious men. Particularly striking are designs by Suzanne Felsen, Paul Longmire, and Duchamp. The store also carries a signature collection that includes links with enamel and semiprecious stones.
Bridal ShoesEditors’ favorite fourth-floor shoe department has high-end footwear from designers like Manolo Blahnik and Vera Wang. Bridal styles are grouped together, so comparing and contrasting is a breeze.
RegistryThe collection of private-label tabletop items at this edgy-fashion mecca makes it a great resource for couples who already have the basics.
