New York’ s children’s stores are often a reflection of the adults who live near them, and Corduroy Kid is no exception. With organic clothes, dolls made from recycled sweaters, and top-of-the-line Micralite strollers, the store is in perfect harmony with its socially conscious Prospect Heights clientele. But what separates Corduroy Kid from some of its Manhattan-based competition is a lack of pressure to turn your 3-year-old into a mini-me. Instead of semi-political, cheeky slogans and images on bibs and spit rags, the brightly colored clothing is adorned with age-appropriate cartoons and animals. Therefore, the Rabbit Moon- and Feather Baby-designed garments look like children’s outfits, not miniature versions of Mom and Dad’s loungewear. Owner Monica Willis and many of her employees have kids and live just around the corner, so they’re keenly aware of the mindset of their neighbors. In fact, it isn’t unheard of to find a cashier ringing up items with a kid strapped across his or her chest.
