Urban gardeners seeking green-thumb guidance have helped build Dimitri’s into the city’s largest and most comprehensive nursery and garden center. Started in the late fifties as a family business in Manhattan, the nursery today sprawls over 12,500 square feet. Apartment gardeners will find plenty of house plants and planters; for the brownstoner: window boxes, garden furniture, and sprinkler systems; for the roof topper: shrubs, trees, and ivies galore. A smart staff full of advice helps novices choose bulbs, annuals, perennials, seeds, and�for the impatient�seedlings, along with tools, soil, mulch, and plant food. Dimitri’s landscape design and contracting business makes its home here as well, and since the retail section is open year-round, you can always pick-up a last-minute gift that grows. — Jack Robertiello
