Profile
Katherine Ridel worked as a textile designer for more than twenty years before launching Fiber Notion, first as a Website in 2007 and then as a studio and shop for fashion crafts in 2008. The narrow store with clean white walls is easy to overlook, but it holds a surprising array of innovative, high-quality items: There are "charm packs," or color-coordinated swatches of repurposed trend-forecasting fabrics; Japanese papers and linen tape; handmade beads and porcelain buttons; and a carefully chosen selection of cotton, wool, and silk fabrics in jacquards and novelty patterns from around the world. In the back is the fiber room containing felt, mill-end yarn, and various crafting tools like plastic cording and felting needles. The store hosts fee-based individual sewing lessons and classes limited to four studentsoften in nostalgic, retro arts, from knitting and crochet to sock puppetry and wrapped fiber beading.
