Profile

In his first boutique, Gary Graham displays delicately worn-in leather pieces, dyed silks, draping knits, and voluminous soie skirts. Tucked into a small, round space on the first floor of ABC Carpet & Home, the intimate shop showcases Graham’s collection without feeling sparse or overcrowded. For a boutique without proper walls, the décor fits the aesthetic of the designer, with dark wood floors and frayed wool, cotton, and silk scarves draped artfully around the racks. An elaborate wooden mannequin with the head of a wolf models pretty patterned skirts and cropped blazers at the entranceshoppers might find it topped with the feathered face of an owl on subsequent visits, as bust-like, interchangeable heads are displayed above the register. Each of Graham’s pieces is intensive and beautifully worked, from tank dresses colored by a Japanese tie-dye technique called Shibori, gathered, reversible skirts, and soft prewashed-leather handbags. The racks also contain pieces made exclusively for the store, like a long, intricately embroidered coat, and a matching vest with leather detailing. Glass cases near the register hold one-of-a-kind stitched-and-beaded floral necklaces by Rebecca Purcell.
