Part of a small chain of jewelry stores in New York City, Montauk, and Greenwich, Stefan Paul opened this Plaza Hotel location in late 2008. The three ownersa watch expert, an antique collector, and a designeropened their first store in Manhattan back in 1953. Each of the company’s stores has a different name, and this one is dedicated to co-owner Mario Novo’s son, Stefan Paul. Set in the center of the Plaza’s Grand Concourse level, the shop contains five cases of jewelry from its own manufacturer, a few Steinway watches (shaped like the company’s grand pianos), vintage jewelry, and some diamond necklaces and earrings from industry heavyweights like David Webb and Van Cleef & Arpels. Stefan Paul prides itself on being a bit more affordable than its peers in the Plazaprices dip as low as the mid-three-digits, though they can still soar into the millions, depending on the order. The most popular piece is a classic diamond chain, available in 20 to 40 karats, but the store also sells colored diamonds, remounts rings, and does a fair amount of business in push presentspendants or other statement pieces given to mothers who have just given birth.
