Since Montreal-based design duo Gilles Fortin and Denise Deslauriers created the Tristan and America label in 1973, the fashion chain has expanded to over 70 locations across North America. The Rockefeller Center outpost carries only Tristan, the women's line. The company claims to offer trendy, urban style at affordable pricesalong the lines of European chains Zara and H&Mbut without the aid of a clever stylist and great lighting, the clothes look less trendy and more Talbot's. They are just the kind of leather skirts and fitted tweed jackets you might see on makeover shows looking to up the hip factor of suburban soccer moms. Even the space itselfall faux-marble floors, dark wood, and Lite FM listeningis blandly mall-ish for a store that aspires to attract the young and fashionable. What Tristan does well, however, and what young, working shoppers can appreciate, are the affordable office-appropriate suits, coats, and jackets that are modestly stylish without being over-the-top.
