Profile
The Whitney is closed in preparation for the new building’s opening on May 1, 2015.
Just off the lobby of one of New York's most celebrated museums, the Whitney Museum of American Art’s shop is modest in size but not selection. Four well-stocked shelves of obligatory postcards (Andy Warhol, Alice Neel, Wayne Thiebaud) adorn one wall. It’s flanked by two stands, one filled with quirky and eclectic DVD titles like Helvetica, Nan Goldin: In My Life, and Japanther, and the other holding a collection of jazz, new age, and electronic CDs, with recordings by such luminaries as Terry Riley and Pierre Schaeffer. On the far wall, there are frame-worthy posters of works by Jasper Johns, Edward Hopper, and Keith Haring next to shelves of books covering a wide spectrum of subjects: painting, photography, cultural movements, and the internet, to name a few. Also notable is a rack of arts journals, including PAJA Journal of Performance and Art, Camera Obscura, October, Grey Room, and Cabinet. With so many visitors, the space can get a bit cramped, so shoppers are drawn to the expansive checkout desk, where they can pick up publications about the Whitney’s current exhibitions.
