Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who recently changed her party affiliation from Democrat to independent, has taken an early step in her re-election campaign. But it is still not clear whether Sinema is definitely running for a second term.
Sinema's campaign filed a new statement of candidacy and a statement of organization for the 2024 election cycle with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday. The filings reflect her new party affiliation as an independent and they allow her campaign to continue fundraising even though she has not yet made a formal announcement that she's running.
In announcing her party switch, Sinema declined to say whether she would run for re-election in 2024, Politico reported. Some Democrats, including Rep. Ruben Gallego, had been openly weighing a primary challenge against the moderate senator before she changed parties. Gallego is still considering a run.
If she does decide to run, the race would present a dilemma to the national party, and whether the party would provide Sinema with the same resources and support as other incumbents.
