The United States’ decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem and recognize the city as Israel’s capital was rebuked by the international community in a late December United Nations vote. The shift in the U.S. position also set off a wave of protests, further complicating the peace process. Palestinians say they now feel the U.S. cannot be a neutral broker of any future agreement between them and Israel. But Jerusalem, considered a holy center for the world’s three major monotheistic religions, has always been a contested city.
