BMX is back and Hannah Roberts is trying to go one better

Sean Nevin

After debuting at the Tokyo Games in 2021, BMX Freestyle is back and Team USA's Hannah Roberts is the most dominant force in the sport.

In case you didn't catch the BMX last time around, the freestyle event gives competitors 60 seconds to execute a series of flips and tricks in a park featuring ramps, rails, walls and embankments. Riders have two runs each to impress judges, who score each run out of 100. In the final, each rider's best score is the one that counts.

Roberts, 22, was expected to take gold in Tokyo but a virtuoso second run by Great Britain's Charlotte Worthington consigned Roberts to silver medal position. Now a five-time world champion and having taken the BMX Freestyle title as the women's event made its long-awaited debut at the X Games in June, Roberts is again the favorite to secure that elusive gold.

"It really did suck not to win, but I’m kind of grateful I didn’t," Roberts said about her near miss in Tokyo. "I put way more time and effort into the gym and different riding places, and focused really hard on actually riding."

Back to the diving, where American divers Jess Parratto and Delaney Schnell have come up short in their bid to return to the Olympic podium. They finished sixth out of eight in the synchronized 10-meter platform finals.

Parratto and Schnell fell into a last-place hole after the first of their five dives and never fully recovered. They won silver in this event in Tokyo and had been expected to contend for another second-place honor behind the splashless wonders of China, Quan Hongchan and Chen Yuxi.

The Chinese pair littered the scoreboard with nines this time too, winning gold. They finished way ahead of second-placed Kim Mi-rae and Jo Jin-mi, who won North Korea's second silver of the Paris Games. Lois Toulson and Andrea Spendolini-Siriex won bronze for Great Britain.

Meanwhile, the men's triathletes have finished swimming and are now on their bikes. Team USA’s Seth Rider — who, we hope was joking when he said that he was raising his bacterial tolerance by not washing his hands — is in a peloton of more than a dozen cyclists at the front of the race.

After the women triathletes hit the Seine, it's time for the men

Reporting from Paris

The women have been and now it’s the men’s turn to jump into the storied waters of the Seine ... and then do a 25-mile bike ride and a 6-mile run — no big deal. The conditions are now far more sunny than this morning's drizzle.

However, the event has already been subject to major disruption, after the river's water quality was found to be too dangerous at the scheduled start time Monday morning. The athletes got the go-ahead today, although some of the women triathletes reported that the real issue is the extremely strong current in the river.

Stay with us for more on the men's triathlon.

Team USA triathlete Spivey says she swallowed a 'ton of water' during Seine race

Reporting from Paris

Team USA triathlete Taylor Spivey said she swallowed "a ton of water" during the swimming leg of her triathlon event in the River Seine — a waterway that’s historically been so polluted that swimming in it was illegal for the past century.

Spivey, who finished tenth in the race, told NBC News that her main concern was not the quality of the water, however, but the "insane" and "shocking" strength of the current, which she said was so strong that she felt the race could have been called off.

"That current — wow," she said. "I felt like I was on a treadmill in one place."

Asked about the water quality, she added, "I’ve taken a lot of probiotics over the past month. So we’ll see how it goes."
