The New York Jets have their next quarterback in Justin Fields.
The signing, worth $40 million over two seasons, including $30 million guaranteed, according to ESPN, is a signal the Jets believe Fields can still show the talent that made him a first-round draft pick in 2021.
Fields will be the successor to Aaron Rodgers, whom the Jets split from after two seasons.
Fields, 26, is a much different quarterback from Rodgers because of his youth and dual-threat abilities, though he is not as much of a threat to throw deep downfield.
He threw for 40 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in three seasons in Chicago to begin his career and rushed for 14 more touchdowns. When the Bears did not bring him back and opted to move on, Fields went to Pittsburgh last season and started the first six games before Russell Wilson replaced him as starter.
Fields still played occasionally even after Wilson usurped him, but it was almost always on designed runs. He finished last season with 1,106 yards passing, five touchdowns, one interception, five rushing touchdowns and six fumbles.
