The Miami Dolphins will place quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve, sidelining him for at least four weeks, the team announced Tuesday.
Tagovailoa suffered a concussion during the Dolphins’ 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 2. Tagovailoa was running for a first down when he collided head-first with Bills safety Damar Hamlin in the third quarter. He walked off the field under his own power but was ruled out immediately.
The earliest Tagovailoa can return will be Oct. 27.

It is at least the third concussion Tagovailoa has sustained in the NFL. He had two during the 2022 season — one in Week 4 and another in Week 16 — which caused him to miss four games. He was also suspected of having another concussion in Week 3 of that season, a controversy that led the league to revamp its concussion protocol. His concussion in Week 16 was not diagnosed until the day after the game. Tagovailoa, 26, the fifth overall pick in the 2020 draft, played in all 17 games for Miami last season and led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards. He signed a four-year, $212 million deal with the Dolphins in August, including $167 million guaranteed.

Miami announced it has signed former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley. Third-year player Skylar Thompson is expected to start in Tagovailoa’s absence. The Dolphins’ next game is Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
