8-month-old boy, 11-year-old girl killed in New Jersey apartment fire

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene, and her brother died at Jersey City Medical Center, officials said.

Two children died overnight in a New Jersey apartment fire, investigators said Thursday.

An 8-month-boy old and his 11-year-old sister were killed in the Jersey City blaze, which started around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office. No other injuries or fatalities were reported.

The mother of the dead children was able to escape with a 6-year-old boy before firefighters arrived. Both survived.

In a statement posted to Facebook, Prosecutor Esther Suarez said the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department are investigating how the single-alarm blaze started.

"Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a working fire with heavy fire and smoke conditions that was confined to a single apartment," she said.

The 11-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, and her brother died just before 12:30 a.m. at Jersey City Medical Center, according to the prosecutor's office. The cause and manner are death have not been determined.

The fire was brought under control just after midnight Thursday, Suarez said.
