Hurricane Ernesto is headed toward Bermuda and could strengthen to a major hurricane by the end of the week.
Ernesto lashed Puerto Rico with heavy rain and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people Wednesday, but did not make landfall there. As of Thursday morning, a hurricane warning is in effect for Bermuda, where Ernesto’s center is forecast to pass Saturday.
The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted a 90% chance of an above-normal number of storms by the time the hurricane season concludes in November. Part of the reason for that above-normal activity includes near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic.
