BAGHDAD — At least 15 people were killed and dozens wounded by a suicide bomber at a security checkpoint in northern Baghdad Sunday.
The 15 killed included both civilians and policemen, a police officer told NBC News. At least 31 other people were injured by the attacker, who detonated a suicide belt at the checkpoint in the the Shiite district of Kadhimiyah, the officer said.
The Associated Press reported that at least four policemen were killed, and that the attacker approached the checkpoint on foot.
No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing, which bore the hallmarks of an ISIS attack. Security forces and public areas, mainly in Shiite neighborhoods, are one of the most frequent targets for the extremist group, which controls key areas in mainly northern and western Iraq.
ISIS has suffered a string of territorial losses since late last year, most recently last month in Fallujah, where it was driven out by Iraqi forces after occupying the city for more than two years. But the extremists have continued to carry out near-daily bombings in and around Baghdad, as well as complex attacks in other countries.
