Texas siblings found dead in Mexico City Airbnb, police confirm

The pair were identified as Laura Morales, 37, and Hugo Iván Morales, 35, of El Paso, Texas, by their mother.

Two Texas siblings vacationing in Mexico City were found dead in their apartment rental on Tuesday, Mexican police and family say.

The victims were identified as siblings Laura Morales, 37, and Hugo Iván Morales, 35, of El Paso, Texas, by their mother to Telemundo. The mother was in Mexico City on Wednesday to identify her children’s bodies.

Mexico City's Office of Citizen Safety officers responded to a report of an unconscious person in an apartment in the Centro neighborhood, in the municipality of Cuauhtémoc, authorities said Tuesday.

Officers interviewed a 61-year-old woman who said the pair, who had “virtual credentials” saying they were from Texas, had rented one of the apartments in the building, police said.

She knocked on their door multiple times to notify them of a repair for a leak in the water meter, but received no response. Eventually she decided to let herself into the apartment and upon entering, she found them unconscious and called police.

The Attorney General’s Office of Mexico City is investigating the deaths. The office said in a statement Wednesday it is awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause.

A family member raising funds for their funeral expenses said the siblings died due to carbon monoxide intoxication.

An Airbnb spokesperson said in a statement that the pair's deaths were a "terrible tragedy," and extended the company's thoughts to their loved ones.

"Our priority right now is supporting those impacted as the authorities investigate what happened, and we stand ready to assist however we can," the statement said.
