New York Design Hunting Winter 2016

New York is on a building binge, but that does not mean everything in town is being demolished and replaced with a glass tower. New Yorkers are fearless when it comes to renovating, whether their projects call for ripping out everything in sight to reveal the bare concrete beneath or the slowest and most meticulous of restorations. For this fifth edition of our guide, design editor Wendy Goodman cut a glazed and gilded path from Matt Austin’s tenement floor-through in Bushwick to a huge, multilevel Upper East Side penthouse that reaches up inside the apartment building’s water tower. More than a few creators of design and architecture opened up their own homes, including the photographer and textile-maker Martyn Thompson, whose loft is a gotta-see-it-to-believe-it extravaganza of color and texture. In these happy marriages of house and householder, each space contains something old and something (breathtakingly, unexpectedly, unprecedentedly) new.
