President Barack Obama says there’s “something about moms” when it comes to promoting the Affordable Care Act.
“Number one, they've got credibility generally,” he said at a rare joint Oval Office event with first lady Michelle Obama and with mothers invited to discuss the new law. “Number two, women oftentimes are the ones making the health care decisions in family, and number three, moms can tell young people who think that they're invincible that they're not."
In the meeting with eight mothers, Mrs. Obama said that the new health law is about offering “peace of mind” to families rather than about waging a political battle in Washington.
The Obama administration’s efforts to promote the new health policy – especially with young and healthy people whose participation is crucial to keep insurance costs low – has been hampered by the poor functioning of the HealthCare.Gov website and by the widespread cancellation of existing plans that do not meet the law’s standards.
Mrs. Obama is also slated to promote the law in interviews with three radio hosts on Wednesday evening.
