On the Cover of New York Magazine: George Floyd’s America

Photograph by Michael Christopher Brown

The killing of George Floyd exposed the worst excesses of police brutality and set off a week of protests and demonstrations that have only intensified. In this issue, New York listens to the voices of those many deeply involved in helping the country chart a path forward. Zak Cheney-Rice spoke with Representative John Lewis on the view from 55 years of struggle. The magazine also include conversations with Representative Ilhan Omar on how Minnesota’s inequality was a tinderbox; Senator Cory Booker on the structural changes America needs; young protestors; the police officers they’re marching against; shop owners who see working as their mission; worried parents who don’t know how this will end; and more.

The photograph on the cover was taken at a Black Lives Matter protest in Los Angeles on June 3 by Michael Christopher Brown. Zak Cheney-Rice writes in the magazine, “…these protests may well produce more just and less violent law enforcement, at least in some places. But the degree will depend on Americans controlling their impulses — meaning less the demonstrators than those who support parachuting a military occupation into cities to crack down on protesters at the behest of the most erratic, unhinged president in recent memory.”
