Instagram released a new logo today. My official review: It’s fine. It’s whatever. I’ll still use the app. But, more interestingly: The minimalist redesign’s gradient color scheme bears a striking resemblance to one of Microsoft PowerPoint’s preset slide backgrounds. Specifically: “Early Sunset.”
Turns out, to create a new look for a multibillion-dollar company you only need to fire up PowerPoint, select the “early sunset” color fill, and you’re in business. (Wow. I am in the wrong line of work.)
“You’ve inspired us to update our look by the way you’ve evolved. We designed our new look to match your vibrant and diverse stories,” Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom explained of the new logo. Apparently, we haven’t “evolved” past my middle-school computer class.
Instagram’s suite of editing apps — Hyperlapse, Boomerang, and Layout —also got a makeover today with the same color scheme.
