Super Bowl 2025: Eagles defeat Chiefs 40-22; Jalen Hurts MVP; Kendrick Lamar performs at halftime

The Eagles dominated the game from start to finish and their defense intercepted Patrick Mahomes twice.

The Kansas City Chiefs entered Super Bowl 59 attempting to make history as the only team in the NFL’s Super Bowl era to win three consecutive titles.

Instead, by the third quarter Sunday, a far different kind of unprecedented event was unfolding — the Chiefs were on the verge of becoming the first Super Bowl team ever held scoreless.

From the very start, this Super Bowl was controlled by the Philadelphia Eagles, who celebrated under green-and-white confetti inside the Superdome in New Orleans after cruising past Kansas City, 40-22.

It was the second Super Bowl title in Philadelphia’s franchise history, following its championship from the 2017 season.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was named the game’s most valuable player after throwing for 221 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception, and rushing for 72 yards and a touchdown.

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 257 yards, but all three of his touchdown passes came after the Chiefs had already trailed 34-0. Travis Kelce, Mahomes’ most dependable receiving target as Kansas City won three Super Bowls in the last five years, caught four passes for 39 yards.

Saquon Barkley gives his best to New York, former teammates

As he celebrated a Super Bowl win, star Eagles running back Saquon Barkley still had time to shout out his former New York Giants teammates.

Barkley went to Philadelphia as a free agent this past off-season from a bitter rival, and he had nothing but kind words for former co-workers.

"I'm forever grateful for everything that went on in New York," he told the NFL Network. "I got nothing but love for those guys, and hopefully they're super proud of me and seeing me at this moment. But the opportunity came where I had to make decisions for me and my family. My family felt like coming into Philadelphia, I'll be able to expand my legacy."

And that's a wrap on the 2024-25 NFL season

So long, New Orleans. See you (relatively) soon, Santa Clara.

Super Bowl fanatics have a little less than a year to get charged up for the NFL's next championship game, which is set for Feb. 8, 2026, at Levi's Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers.

NBC will televise Super Bowl 60 in what will be one of the best sports TV days of the calendar. Eight gold medal events are set for this super Sunday that coincides with Day 2 of the Winter Olympics, which is also carried by NBC.

The 2025 NFL schedule will probably be announced in the middle of May. The 2024 schedule was announced on May 16, year and the 2023 campaign was revealed on May 12.

And while the exact dates of each team's 17 regular-season games are still TBD, the opponents for each squad are set.

Eagles evened the Super Bowl score with Chiefs

Wide receiver A.J. Brown admitted his Eagles were still sore from their heartbreaking Super Bowl loss to Kansas City two years ago — and that that pain helped fuel their drive

"We can't rewrite history, but we can make it even, and we damn well sure did tonight," Brown told the NFL Network after Philadelphia's convincing 40-22 win.

Brown made headlines during the playoff season, reading "Inner Excellence" on the bench.

"I didn't need the book today; I had all the 'Inner Excellence' locked in," said a jubilant Brown, who caught a TD pass tonight.

Hurts makes history with arm and legs

Juliette Arcodia

Reporting from New Orleans

Hurts was voted the winner of the Pete Rozelle Trophy awarded to the Super Bowl's most valuable player.

Hurts completed 17 of 22 attempts (77.3%) for 221 yards and two touchdowns, for a 119.7 rating, and added 72 rushing yards and one touchdown on the ground, the most rushing yards by a quarterback ever in a Super Bowl.

It is the 34th time a quarterback has been named Super Bowl MVP.

Hurts became the fifth quarterback ever with multiple touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown in a Super Bowl, joining Ken Anderson (Super Bowl 16), Pro Football Hall of Famers Brett Favre (Super Bowl 31) and Joe Montana (Super Bowl 19) and Patrick Mahomes (Super Bowl 54).

Hurts, who had 304 passing yards and 70 rushing yards in Super Bowl 57, is the first quarterback ever with at least 200 passing yards and 50 rushing yards in multiple Super Bowls. He also became the third quarterback with a touchdown pass and a rushing touchdown in multiple Super Bowls, joining Montana (Super Bowls 16 and 19) and Pro Football Hall of Famer John Elway (Super Bowls 21 and 33).

MVP Hurts gives all the credit to Eagles' defense

Hurts, who won Super Bowl MVP, said all the credit for Philadelphia's big win goes to teammates on the defensive side of the ball.

"Defense wins championships; defense wins championships," he told Fox Sports moments after the game. "And they gave us opportunistic, gave us short fields."

The Chiefs scored two garbage time touchdowns to make the final score a deceptively close 40-22. That final score doesn't reflect the Eagles' relentless defense, which totaled six sacks and forced three turnovers.

Jalen Hurts comes out victorious

Hurts, fresh off of a blowout against the Chiefs, commended the team that helped him carry this season over the finish line, saying on the Fox broadcast that "we got a special group this year" and that "we were able to learn from the past," like when the Birds fell to Kansas City in 2023.

He also called out the "nice new pieces to get over the hump," namely running back Barkley, who wasn't the leader of the pack tonight but whose talent throughout the season surely earned the Eagles a spot in the Super Bowl tonight.

A happy Philadelphia crowd in New Orleans

Philly fans celebrated the win by singing the Eagles' fight song in the Superdome.

Almost over

The Eagles are in victory formation. They can kneel it out for the win.

Chiefs making the most of Super Bowl garbage time

Mahomes found Xavier Worthy for a 50-yard touchdown, adding a layer of makeup to this ugly game.

He found Hopkins for the two-point conversion, cutting the Eagles' lead to a deceptively close 40-22.

The best shower of Nick Sirianni's year

Eagles players just dumped the ceremonial cooler of Gatorade on coach Sirianni as the clock ticks down toward an Eagles victory.

The Gatorade was yellow/green, of course.

Kenny Pickett now in the game

This game has gotten so out of hand the Eagles took starting quarterback Jalen Hurts out and put backup Kenny Pickett in to finish it off.

Chiefs get into double-digit points

Mahomes found DeAndre Hopkins for a 7-yard touchdown, as the Chiefs get to leave New Orleans with a little dignity.

A two-point toss from Mahomes to Justin Watkins to cut Philadelphia's lead to 40-14 with a little less than 3 minutes left.

That score also made winners of gamblers who bet that the game's total points would go over 48.5.

Huge cheer for Brandon Graham

Reporting from the Superdome in New Orleans

Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham got a long look on the jumbotron on the last Chiefs possession, and he received raucous applause from the fans still in attendance.

Graham, 36, who has been with the Eagles since 2010, made some big plays during the team's last Super Bowl win. He is in the final year of his contract, and tonight's could be his last game. His season looked over after he tore his triceps in Week 12, but he was activated for this game.

Kelce makes second and then third catches

For anyone still paying attention, Travis Kelce caught his second and third balls of the night.

Down 40-6, he's caught passes for 9 and 8 yards on this current drive.

A good number of empty seats in the Superdome right now

Reporting from the Superdome in New Orleans

A very Chiefs-light crowd is even lighter late in the fourth quarter of this blowout.

There are swaths of empty seats in the Superdome as the game has more or less been over since the second quarter. Though it wasn’t the most expensive ticket in recent Super Bowl history, the fans who left early have to be particularly upset after having shelled out a small fortune for the game.

Another FG for the Eagles

Elliott has been busy tonight; he connects from 50 yards out to extend the Philadelphia lead to 40-6.

It's a five-score lead with 8:01 left.

The Eagles are doing this after they almost fired their coach

Reporting from the Superdome in New Orleans

It wasn't that long ago when Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was widely considered to be on the hot seat.

Philly was 2-2 four weeks into the year, and murmurs began about Sirianni’s job security, especially in light of the team’s poor finish to last season. In Week 5, Sirianni was arguing with Eagles fans after a win because of how uninspiring the team’s performance was.

Now? The man who is the winningest coach in Philadelphia history may have the best job security of any coach in the league.

Mahomes sacked and fumble

At some point, the Chiefs will have to take out Mahomes for his own health.

He was sacked by Milton Williams and coughed up a fumble for the QB's third turnover of the game.

Eagles add another FG to this blowout

Jake Elliott connected from 48 yards out, extending Philadelphia's lead to an insurmountable 37-6 with less than 10 minutes left.

Las Vegas still has a close on this game, as bettors who played the total score (over/under 48.5 points) wager are on the edges of their seats.

Ye appears in ad days after making offensive comments about the Jewish community

Rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, appeared in a Super Bowl ad for Yeezy.

“I spent all the money for the commercial on these new teeth, so, once again, I had to shoot it on the iPhone," Ye says in the ad, which was paid for by his LLC.

The ad aired just days after he posted a barrage of messages to X in which he made offensive comments about the Jewish community and said he has “dominion” over his wife.

Who will be MVP?

After three quarters, the Super Bowl MVP race might come down to a favorite vs. two long shots.

Hurts was a 5-1 pregame pick, and he has managed the Eagles offense in a highly capable manner tonight. By early in the fourth quarter, DraftKings had him as the heavy 1-20 favorite.

But Philadelphia defenders Zack Baun (800-1) and Cooper DeJean (200-1) had key first-half interceptions that got their team rolling.

Von Miller was the last defensive player to win the Super Bowl MVP, in Denver's win in 2016.

Chiefs avoid historic offensive futility

Andrew Greif

Kansas City was threatening to become the first team in Super Bowl history to be held scoreless. It avoided that ignominious distinction when Mahomes threw a 24-yard touchdown with 34 seconds left in the third quarter to pull within 34-6 of Philadelphia.

Chiefs cut into massive deficit, now trail 34-6

The Chiefs will not be shut out as Mahomes found Worthy for 24 yards and a touchdown.

But the two-point try failed, so the Chiefs need four scores with 15-1/2 minutes left.

50-yard gain for Worthy

It's too little too late, but Mahomes finally found a big play, hooking up with Xavier Worthy for 50 yards.

Now it's just turned into a humiliation

Hurts and Devonta Smith connected for a 46-yard touchdown, extending the Eagles' lead to 34-0.

With 17-1/2 minutes left in the game, now just the final margin is in question.

Eagles approaching historic blowout

Andrew Greif

Fifteen Super Bowls have been decided by one-score margins since 2000. Super Bowl 59 doesn't appear to be one of them, however.

By leading 34-0 midway through the third quarter, the Eagles could be approaching a blowout of historic proportions. In all, 13 Super Bowls have been decided by more than 20 points and five by more than 30.

The largest margin of victory in a Super Bowl was in 1990, in San Francisco's 55-10 victory against Denver in Super Bowl 24. Other big blowouts included Chicago winning Super Bowl 20 over New England by 36 points, Dallas crushing Buffalo to win Super Bowl 27 by 35 points and Super Bowl 22, which Washington won 42-10 over Denver.

Travis Kelce finally on the board — but it matters little

The star Kansas City tight end finally caught a pass in New Orleans.

He picked up 8 yards on third-and-13 — and it didn't matter as the Eagles held on fourth down.

Performer onstage with Lamar reveals Palestinian flag during halftime show

A performer who was part of Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show was detained by security after waving the Sudanese flag and Palestinian flags together with the words “Sudan” and “Gaza” written on them toward the end of the performance, the NFL said.

The person, who was dressed in black like other dancers on the field, was identified by the NFL “as part of the 400-member field cast.”

“We commend security for quickly detaining the individual who displayed the flag,” the league said. “The individual hid the item on his possession and unveiled it late in the show. No one involved with the production was aware the individual’s intent.”

The New Orleans Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations directed NBC News to the NFL security team for comment.

A representative for Apple Music did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Eagles add a field goal, remain in total control

Kicker Jake Elliott connected from 29 yards out and the Eagles extended their lead to 27-0.

While the Eagles failed to score a TD, they took plenty of time off the clock. Those points also make it so that Kansas City will need the ball at least four times and score three touchdowns with three two-point conversions (24 points) plus a field goal (three points) just to tie the Eagles, while allowing no points.

Hurts making it happen with his legs

The Chiefs don't have many answers for Jalen Hurts.

Faced with third-and-5 at the Eagles' 25, Hurts didn't see anyone open, so he tucked it and took off for a back-breaking 16-yard first-down gain.

A few plays later, Hurts broke another run for a big first down. The Eagles are near the goal line.

Hurts is the game's leading rusher, with 55 yards on 10 carries. Barkley, his league-leading running back, has 42 yards on 16 carries.

The possession battle is working against the Chiefs

Reporting from the Superdome in New Orleans

Trailing 24-0 in the second half and putting up no points on their first drive, the Chiefs face a serious conundrum: Will they have enough possessions to get back in this game?

Kansas City needs at least three touchdowns to tie this game, and that’s assuming it converts a two-point conversion after each one.

The problem is the Chiefs are facing the second-best rushing attack from the regular season and an Eagles team that is more than happy to pound the ball on the ground — and bleed the clock — in the second half. There’s a lot working against Kansas City right now.

Travis Kelce and Chiefs offense continue to struggle

It's as if the Kansas City Chiefs have forgotten Travis Kelce exists.

The star tight end has no catches early in the third quarter, as the Chiefs offense failed to score again.

As Lamar's show came to a close, the words "GAME OVER" appeared over the field in lights.

The halftime show performance featured SZA and Samuel L. Jackson and included some of Lamar's biggest hits: "Humble," "Squabble Up" and "Not Like Us." Lamar finished the set with "TV OFF" with an appearance from DJ Mustard.

Can the Kansas City Chiefs pull a Patriots vs. Falcons?

There's precedent for the a big Super Bowl rally.

The New England Patriots rallied from a 28-3 deficit against the Atlanta Falcons on Feb. 5, 2017, in Houston.

The relentless Philadelphia front has been absolutely dominating this game, so an epic rally seems unlikely.

"We will see if Patrick Mahomes has some Tom Brady in him, and we will see if coach Andy Reid has some coach Bill Belichick in him, as well," said Fox Sports football commentator Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots tight end on that Patriots title team.

Lamar performs Grammy-winning 'Not Like Us'

About halfway through his show, Lamar finally launched into the moment we've all been waiting for: his award-winning diss track "Not Like Us."

The crowd loudly sang along to the lyrics "a minor," yelling over Lamar's mics and the blasting music.

SZA takes the stage

Lamar told some dancers he wanted to play their favorite song as beats from "Not Like Us" were teased, but he was quick to move into "luther" as SZA, who is featured on the song, joined him onstage, dressed in full red.

Lamar and his dancers, dressed in red, white and blue, formed a human-made American flag as Lamar switched to the hit "Humble."

Samuel L. Jackson continues to serve as somewhat of an MC, wearing an Uncle Sam-inspired outfit.

Kendrick Lamar's halftime performance begins

The highly anticipated performance of the first solo hip-hop artist to headline halftime is now underway.

It kicked off with an intro from none other than Samuel L. Jackson as Lamar launched into "GNX" atop a black Grand National car surrounded by a group of dancers in red.

Amid dominant Eagles half, Saquon Barkley sets rushing record

Andrew Greif

Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley is the new all-time NFL record holder for total rushing yards in a single season, including the playoffs. Denver's Terrell Davis set the previous record of 2,476 in 1998, but Barkley broke it, reaching 2,478 yards with his final carry of the first half.

Barkley rushed for 2,005 yards in the regular season, becoming only the ninth 2,000-yard rusher in league history, then gained 442 yards in Philadelphia's first three playoff victories to advance to Super Bowl 59.

Not great ...

Updated halftime odds from DraftKings say the Chiefs are a 10/1 underdog, meaning a bet for them to win this game would pay 10 times whatever you wager.

The spread — a number meant to be close to a 50/50 bet — is Eagles -15.5, meaning Philadelphia is expected to win by about 16 points.

Not even the yellow flags are going K.C.'s way

Even the yellow laundry is folding in Philadelphia's favor.

The Chiefs, whom conspiracy theorists will tell you the officials favor, have been flagged four times for 45 yards. The Eagles have only been penalized three times for 25 yards.

The NFL and the referees union were forced last week to take on baseless allegations that officials have been favoring Kansas City.

Patrick Mahomes hasn't played like this in months

Andrew Greif

Under pressure from Philadelphia's relentless pass rush all game, Patrick Mahomes has looked nothing like the player who continually rescued the Chiefs all season.

The last time Mahomes threw two interceptions in one game was nine games ago, on Nov. 17 at Buffalo. Not coincidentally, that was the only game the Chiefs lost during the regular season in which Mahomes played.

We could be seeing a historic halftime lead

There have been 13 first-half shutouts in Super Bowl history — and every one of the teams that were ahead went on to win the game.

If the Chiefs don’t score this half, it will be the largest margin in a first-half shutout in Super Bowl history and one point away from the largest first-half lead in Super Bowl history.

The blowout is on

Hurts found A.J. Brown for 12 yards and a touchdown.

It's 24-0 Eagles, and it's hard to believe the Chiefs can come back from this.

The Eagles lead in first downs (13-1), total yards (117-11) and time of possession 19:34-8:51.

Kansas City will get the ball back to start the third quarter, but the Eagles' defensive front is looking unblockable.

Don't count the Chiefs out quite yet.

In each of the three Super Bowl victories won by Kansas City with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, the Chiefs trailed by 10 points, only to emerge victorious. But only one team — New England in 2017 — has overcome a deficit larger than the 17-0 margin the Chiefs currently face.

Some big halftime deficits

The largest halftime deficits overcome in Super Bowl history:

  • 18 points in the 2017 Super Bowl. Atlanta led New England 21-3 at the half, but the Patriots won it in overtime 34-28
  • 10 points in the 2023 Super Bowl. Philadelphia led Kansas City 24-14 but went on to lose 38-35.

There are three Super Bowls when a team was up seven points at the half and ended up losing.

Eagles offense has dominated everywhere but scoreboard

Andrew Greif

Philadelphia has only seven points to show for it, but by most statistics it has dominated the first quarter-plus of Super Bowl 59.

With 9:30 to play before halftime, the Eagles have run 29 plays — 19 more than Kansas City.

The Eagles also have 151 yards, to the Chiefs' 26. Most surprising, perhaps, is that their running attack has accounted for relatively little of that total. Philadelphia has passed for 104 of its 151 yards. Saquon Barkley has only 20 yards on 10 carries.

The nonprofit organization's ad against hate featured the two trading barbs about why they hate each other — citing reasons such as “you look different,” “talk different” or “’cause I don’t understand you.”

Philadelphia's defense dominating early

The Chiefs were forced into their third consecutive punt to start the game.

Philadelphia, up 7-0, will have good field position at its own 44.

The Eagles lead in first downs, 9-1, and total yards, 119-26. The Cook interception has kept this game as close as it is.

The Chiefs are bringing big blitzes on third down

Reporting from Superdome in New Orleans

On that Jalen Hurts interception, the Chiefs sent multiple blitzers — a linebacker up the middle and a cornerback off the edge. Hurts rushed his throw a bit and was picked off.

That’s the second time Kansas City has blitzed big on third down — the previous time the Chiefs got a sack, but the play was wiped out by an offside penalty.

If the Eagles get into third-and-long, expect Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo — who blitzed Josh Allen with success in the AFC championship game — to send extra defenders at Hurts.

T-Mobile used its Super Bowl ad spot to roll out a public test of 'T-Mobile Starlink'

T-Mobile's Super Bowl ad was more than just entertaining. It was also a public test of "T-Mobile Starlink."

"We’re taking the next step on our mission to end dead zones with the launch of the public beta of @TMobile @Starlink, the first & ONLY space-based network from a mobile carrier in the U.S.," Mike Katz, president of marketing, strategy and products at T-Mobile, posted on X after the ad.

EVP and Chief Technology Officer John Saw said the mobile network is inviting users to register to try the "satellite-to-mobile service to send text messages in isolated locations."

Saw added that the company is using the technology to broadcast wireless emergency alerts to users who have capable devices that are within range and aren't connected to a network, no matter who their cellphone providers are.

The offering was created with Starlink, an internet service operated via Elon Musk's Starlink.

Key piece of Chiefs' defense in discomfort

Andrew Greif

After Philadelphia's touchdown drive, Kansas City defensive lineman Chris Jones was shown on the broadcast getting his neck worked on by a member of the Chiefs' medical staff.

Jones went back in the game, but if he is at all limited, it could be a significant setback for Kansas City's defense, which has relied on Jones' pass-rushing ability during its dynastic run of Super Bowl titles. Since 2016, the only defensive tackle in the NFL with more sacks than Jones (80.5) is Aaron Donald (91.0).

Another big penalty against Kansas City

A big third-down sack by the Chiefs was wiped out by an offsides penalty called on Charles Omenihu.

The Eagles are still driving as the first quarter ends with a 7-0 Philadelphia lead.

Philly has it second-and-14 from the Kansas City 34 to start the second quarter.

Sabrina Ionescu shines in Michelob Ultra commercial

Rohan Nadkarni and Rebecca Cohen

WNBA star Ionescu is showing off her skills on a different court in a Michelob Ultra commercial — pickleball — proving that women can shine across multiple different sports. She said her presence in a Super Bowl commercial is something she didn’t see growing up.

“You didn’t see a lot of female athletes, no matter how good they were, and I had great role models and people to look up to when I was younger, playing in sports. You just didn’t see them in commercials and on TV, because women’s sports wasn’t where it is now,” she said.

Ionescu said it’s “exciting to just be a part of that and push the game forward and allowing a lot of young girls that are watching Super Bowl with their families to look up, watch the TV and know that they can be on there one day, too.”

The spot starred Willem Dafoe and Catherine O’Hara, playing pickleball opposite Ionescu and other pro athletes.

Chiefs have to punt for a second time

Philadelphia's league-leading defense is putting plenty of pressure on Mahomes as Kansas City was forced to punt for a second consecutive possession.

The punt goes for a touchback as the Eagles take over, ahead 7-0.

Kansas City surrenders first opening-quarter TD this postseason

Andrew Greif

When Philadelphia used its "Brotherly Love" shove for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead, it was the first touchdown Kansas City has allowed in the opening quarter this postseason.

It also was only the second time this postseason that Kansas City has trailed, the first being the third quarter of the AFC championship game, when Buffalo took a one-point lead.

New Eagles WR Jahan Dotson making presence known early

Dotson was traded to Philadelphia earlier this season from the Washington Commanders. The Eagles sent a third-round pick and seventh-round pick in the 2025 draft for Dotson and and a 2025 fifth-rounder.

He has largely been quiet this season but made a huge 28-yard grab on this drive to set up the touchdown.

Eagles 'push' in for TD: 7-0

The NFL especially can’t afford an officiating controversy tonight

The fourth-down penalty on A.J. Brown on the Eagles’ opening drive wasn’t notable only for taking a first down off the board. It was also the first flashpoint play in something that will be heavily scrutinized tonight: how the referees officiate the Chiefs.

There’s been a narrative all playoffs long that Kansas City is getting favorable calls from the refs — which Roger Goodell, the Chiefs, Tom Brady and even President Donald Trump have all denied.

If Kansas City gets the benefit of the doubt on another call or two, that narrative is going to reach a fever pitch.

The Eagles did just get an unnecessary roughness call after a high hit on Dallas Goedert.

Taylor Swift booed in her first jumbotron appearance

Reporting from the Superdome in New Orleans

Megastar Taylor Swift was shown on the jumbotron for the first time after the Chiefs’ first offensive possession — and she was booed by the Eagles-heavy crowd.

Moments later, tennis star Serena Williams posted her support for Swift on X, writing, "I love you @taylorswift13 dont listen to those booo!!"

Eagles and Chiefs exchange punts

Rare to stop Eagles early in postseason

Andrew Greif

Philadelphia failed to score on its opening drive, a rare first-quarter drive this postseason that hasn't resulted in points for the Eagles. In their three postseason wins, the Eagles averaged 12.3 points per first quarter, by far the most of any playoff team.

Movie trailer spots (so far)

It wouldn't be the Super Bowl without some movie spots. So far, we've seen teasers for these upcoming 2025 films:

  • "Jurassic World: Rebirth"
  • "Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning" (star Tom Cruise also appeared in a Super Bowl intro ahead of the game start time)
  • "Lilo & Stitch" live-action film (which featured Stitch running on the field)
  • "How to Train Your Dragon" live-action remake

The refs are still getting booed as the Chiefs take the field

Reporting from New Orleans

The Eagles-heavy crowd were, uh, not fans of the pass interference call on that fourth down. The refs were still hearing it after the punt return.

How Eagles GM Howie Roseman built Philadelphia into an NFL juggernaut

Roseman has led the Eagles to three Super Bowl appearances — a win in 2017, the first in franchise history — and four NFC East titles. Philadelphia faces the Kansas City Chiefs today for another league championship.

“His career is at an absolute apex right now,” Michael Barkann said on NBC Sports Philadelphia’s postgame show after the Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders in the NFC championship game. “He’s won general manager of the year, he might win it again, and he might win it many, many, more times the way he’s constructed this Eagles team.”

NBC Sports’ Reuben Frank said, “He’s one win away from the Hall of Fame, most likely.”

Examples of Chiefs and Eagles fans getting along ... kind of

Even in the heat of Super Bowl battle, NBC Sports found a handful of Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs fans willing to say nice things about the other guys.

Sort of.

"So if I had to say a ice thing about the Chiefs I would say that I think they are really good losers and I can't wait to see it," one Birds supporter said.

Then, with a heavy dose of sarcasm, one Chiefs fan said of Eagles supporters: "Yeah, they're nothing but classy. Classy people. They handle themselves with the utmost self-respect and dignity."

Philly celebs show up for the Eagles

Stars from the two most Philadelphia TV shows are at the Super Bowl to root for the Birds.

Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and Quinta Brunson and Tyler James Williams from "Abbott Elementary" suited up in Eagles green yesterday after touching down in New Orleans.

Lady Gaga graced the Super Bowl crowd in New Orleans with a performance of "Hold My Hand" on the piano.

“Tonight we come together because that’s who we are and that’s what we do," Michael Strahan said after the performance, which appeared to be dedicated to victims of the numerous tragedies that have taken place across the country in 2025. "Welcome to Super Bowl 59 on Fox."

According to the AP, Lady Gaga's performance that was taped at 4 a.m. on Thursday.

Is Taylor Swift the Chiefs' good luck charm?

Now that Taylor Swift is officially inside the Superdome for her 23rd Kansas City Chiefs game (counting regular season and playoffs), it raises the question: Is "Tayvoodoo" real?

Swifties are convinced their favorite pop star has supernatural powers, with no better evidence than Kansas City's 19-3 mark in the games she has attended to see the Chiefs and her boyfriend, tight end Travis Kelce.

That 22-game résumé includes a 6-0 postseason mark, with Swift in attendance for Kansas City's recent playoff wins against Houston and Buffalo and last season's knockout-round triumphs over Miami, the Bills, Baltimore and San Francisco in the Super Bowl.

In a split 3-2 verdict, Fox crew picks Eagles to win

The Fox Sports pregame panel, in a split 3-2 verdict, picked the Eagles to win tonight's big game.

Jimmy Johnson, Michael Strahan and Howie Long all went with the Eagles to pull the mild upset, while Rob Gronkowski and Terry Bradshaw picked the two-time defending champs.

Johnson said he couldn't pick against Philadelphia because the Eagles had pro football's No. 1 defense (allowing 277.8 yards per game) and a strong rushing attack (179.3 yards per game, No. 2 in NFL).

How Saquon Barkley went from expendable in New York to invaluable in Philadelphia

Andrew Greif

Saquon Barkley’s transformation from expendable in New York to invaluable during Philadelphia’s run to today’s Super Bowl did not happen over the course of just one offseason.

It started four and a half years earlier.

The No. 2 overall draft pick out of Penn State in 2018, Barkley entered 2020 having rushed for at least 1,000 yards in each of his first two NFL seasons. But only 19 attempts into this third, he injured the meniscus and tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, and his 2020 season over after two games.

Physically, Barkley was healthy enough to start 13 games for the Giants the very next season. Yet players who have suffered ACL injuries often describe the rehab as a multi-year process because mental confidence in the injury often takes far longer to return than physical strength.

It seems to be an Eagles crowd in New Orleans

Reporting from the Superdome in New Orleans

A little under 90 minutes from kickoff and both teams have come onto the field for pregame warmups.

There were loud cheers for the Eagles as Jalen Hurts led them out of the tunnel.

A few minutes later the Chiefs followed, and with the stands half-full, there were much more boos than cheers.

Based on that and an unofficial count of jerseys around New Orleans this week, expect the crowd to favor Philly today.

Three props from Matthew Berry

Brian Hamilton, NBC Sports

Seeking counsel for those last-minute bets? NBC Sports’ Matthew Berry (@MatthewBerryTMR) likes these three best:

Patrick Mahomes OVER 29.5 Rush Yards

Mahomes has gone over this number in four of his last seven playoff games and he’s rushed for at least 33 yards in each of his last three Super Bowl appearances. When the game is on the line, he’s more than willing to use his legs to make a big play. The Chiefs’ offensive line has been shaky at times, and we know Philly can bring pressure, so I expect at least a few plays where Mahomes is under duress and has to tuck it and run.

Patrick Mahomes UNDER 0.5 Interceptions

Another thing Patrick Mahomes does really well in the playoffs is take care of the football. Over his last nine playoff games, Mahomes has thrown only one interception. And the last interception he threw this season came all the way back in Week 11. He’s doing a great job protecting the football right now and I think that continues against the Eagles.

Dallas Goedert OVER 52.5 Receiving Yards

The logic on this one is simple — Goedert is the Eagles’ leading receiver this postseason and the Chiefs really struggle against tight ends. During the regular season, no team in the NFL allowed more receiving yards to opposing tight ends than the Kansas City Chiefs and they gave up 63 yards to Dalton Schultz in the Divisional Round. Goedert went over this number against the Commanders and Rams each of the past two weeks and I like him to have another big game in the Super Bowl.

Air Force One touches down in New Orleans

Trump has arrived in New Orleans, with Air Force One touching down moments ago.

The president exited the plane holding an umbrella and immediately entered the motorcade. He was accompanied by his daughter Ivanka Trump and one of her sons.

Could this be Travis Kelce's last game?

The Chiefs' star tight end said last week he has multiple seasons remaining. But according to NFL Network, sources say he's still mulling over his future.

Chiefs don’t embrace being ‘villains’

NBC Sports

Mike Florio and Chris Simms unpack Patrick Mahomes’ read on being called “villains” and how the fact of the matter is the Chiefs will not back down and will continue to win.

What are some of the most popular prop bets?

NBC Sports

Patrick Mahomes 25+ rushing yards (-171)

It is not surprising this is one of the most bet player props and parlay pieces. Kansas City’s offense isn’t as impressive as the past two seasons, so Mahomes has had to improvise. Mahomes carried the ball 18 times for 57 yards in two playoff games (43, 14) and while he is 1-1 on this prop, it’s the attempts (11, 7) that matter.

Mahomes was 11-5 to the Under 24.5 yards this season, but you should throw most regular season trends or hit rates out the window when it comes to the Super Bowl. For example, Mahomes has at least 29 rushing yards in four Super Bowls even though he has had nine or fewer rushing attempts in each of the four Super Bowls.

Harrison Butker 2+ Made FGs (-140)

This is a sharp play and fun angle, but let’s play devil’s advocate. Butker has made at least two field goals in two of four Super Bowls with a 10-of-11 mark and it’s no secret that this Chiefs offense isn’t as dynamic or high-scoring as the past two seasons. The only problem with this prop is, it may take touchdowns to beat the Eagles, especially if Saquon Barkley finds success.

First TD Saquon Barkley (+450)

Saquon Barkley has scored the first touchdown in six games all season, including the playoffs. He’s not only a reliable back in the red zone; he has a home-run-hitting ability. His first touchdown frequency is higher than anyone else on the field.

Dallas Goedert 40+ receiving yards (-237)

This makes sense at 40+ yards and even to 50+ yards. He’s gone over this number in all three playoff games. The Kansas City Chiefs do a great job of taking away the primary and outside options of the passing attack. However, since they do that, the middle of the field is usually open to exploit them with your tight end. The Kansas City Chiefs give up the most receiving yards (70) per game to tight ends.

Andy Reid continues to build legacy

This will be Andy Reid's 45th career postseason game as a head coach. He surpasses Bill Belichick (44 games) for the most by a head coach.

If the Chiefs win on Sunday, Reid will join Belichick and Chuck Noll as the only head coaches with at least four Super Bowl wins.

Reid's 28 career postseason victories trails Belichick (31) for the most postseason wins by a head coach in history.

“This great quarterback who has, by the way, a phenomenal wife, OK, she’s a Trump fan, she’s a MAGA fan, so I happen to love her,” Trump said. Trump has previously praised Brittany Mahomes.

How many times have Kansas City and Philadelphia been in the Super Bowl?

Brian Hamilton, NBC Sports

This is the fifth time in the last six years and the sixth time in franchise history that the Chiefs are playing in the Super Bowl. With wins in the last two years, the Chiefs’ record is 4-2 in the Super Bowl.

Other teams who have won back-to-back Super Bowls:

Pittsburgh Steelers 1978-79

San Francisco 49ers 1988-89

Dallas Cowboys 1992-93

Denver Broncos 1997-98

New England Patriots 2003-04

This is Philadelphia’s fifth trip to the Super Bowl. The Eagles are 1-3 in their history, winning 41-33 in 2018 against Tom Brady and the Patriots. Eagles quarterback Nick Foles was the MVP of the game, throwing for 373 yards and 3 TDs as well as catching a pass for a touchdown. In addition to losing to Kansas City (38-35) in Super Bowl 57, the Eagles also lost to the Oakland Raiders (27-10) in Super Bowl 15 and to the New England Patriots (24-21) in Super Bowl 39.

Don’t climb onto anything, Philadelphia mayor asks fans ahead of Super Bowl

Days before the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, Philadelphia’s mayor sought to dissuade celebrating fans from climbing light poles or onto other equipment.

The request by Mayor Cherelle Parker came more than a week after an 18-year-old Temple University student fell from a light pole after the Eagles won the NFC championship and later died.

“Please, Philadelphia, I implore you as your mayor: Do not climb light poles or anything else,” Parker said Thursday at a news conference about celebration preparations.

Trump is en route to the Super Bowl

Alexandra Marquez and Owen Hayes

Trump has departed West Palm Beach on Air Force One and is heading to New Orleans.

According to a White House official, several GOP senators, including Sens. Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, John Barrasso of Wyoming, Tim Scott of South Carolina, Katie Britt of Alabama, Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, Roger Marshall of Kansas and Eric Schmitt of Missouri are flying with Trump.

Also joining them on the plane are the president's daughter Ivanka Trump and one of her sons, plus Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and his wife, and Rep. Tom Emmer and his wife.

A White House official also said Trump plans to do a meet-and-greet in New Orleans when he arrives that will include the game’s honorary coin toss participants, family members of the victims of the New Year’s terror attack on Bourbon Street, members of the New Orleans Police Department and emergency personnel.

Super Bowl LIX is just the ninth rematch ever

It's also the second time that two teams have met in the Super Bowl twice in a three-season span (Buffalo vs. Dallas in the 1993 and 1994 Super Bowls).

Kansas City overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat Philadelphia, 38-35, in Super Bowl LVII following the 2022 season, the only Super Bowl ever in which both teams scored at least 35 points.

Trump congratulates both teams ahead of the game

In a message from the White House ahead of the Super Bowl, President Donald Trump congratulated the players, coaches and staff on the Eagles and Chiefs, saying that they "represent the best of the best in professional football, but they also embody the best of the American Dream."

"Their hard work, dedication, and tenacity is admirable, and their individual journeys are as inspiring as the drive and determination that has led them to this extraordinary moment," he added.

In the message, Trump also offered condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the terror attack in New Orleans on New Year's Day.

"While thousands of fans from across our Nation gather in New Orleans to cheer on their favorite team, we remember that 14 families will be missing a loved one who was tragically murdered during a senseless terrorist attack while celebrating the New Year on Bourbon Street," the president wrote. The NFL and YouTube host flag football game

Among the slew of Super Bowl weekend events was an NFL and YouTube-hosted "Creator Flag Football Game" yesterday.

A mix of YouTubers, music stars, pro football legends and other athletes took the field, including: IShowSpeed (aka Darren Jason Watkins Jr.), who has 35.9 million YouTube subscribers; Kai Cenat, who has 7 million subscribers; and retired NFL stars Michael Vick (Team Speed) and Cam Newton (Team Kai), who were quarterbacks.

The Google-owned video giant has touted itself as "the ultimate destination for football culture all year long," stating in a recent post on its news blog that "fans come to YouTube all season long to watch analysis and commentary on the games, behind the scenes moments and the newest favorite: podcasts from former and current players."

Last year's creator flag-football game generated over 100 million video views across platforms, according to YouTube. Numbers for this year's game have yet to be announced.
