Travis Kelce says it “just wasn’t our day” as he reflected on the Kansas City Chiefs’ recent Super Bowl loss.
“Couldn’t find a lick of momentum,” he said on the Wednesday episode of his “New Heights” podcast, which he co-hosts with his brother, Jason Kelce.
“I’m kicking myself for some of the tiny, tiny decisions I made on the field,” he said. “I wasn’t the best leader that I could be in motivating my guys and keeping my guys calm, cool and collected.”
The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Chiefs 40-22 in the NFL’s biggest game.
“I put a lot of that on myself as the guy that’s been in the building for 12 years and seen a lot of football and actually seen a situation just like this in the Super Bowl,” Travis Kelce said. “It’s a tough pill to swallow. It’s a hard reality, man.”
Kelce, who is considered one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, has played for the Chiefs since 2013.
On the podcast, he shared his love for his teammates, coaches and fans.
“I’m sorry for how it ended,” he said. “I have a beautiful life, man. I have loved ones, I have the most amazing family in the world that supports me in everything that I do and they were all there cheering me on and hoping for the best on Sunday, man.”
His parents, Ed and Donna Kelce, supported him at the big game, as well as his girlfriend, Taylor Swift.
Also there cheering him on was Jason Kelce, who praised his brother for everything he accomplished despite his team’s loss.
“It wasn’t all negative for the Chiefs. You broke the most catches in Super Bowl history,” he said. “I know that you don’t probably care that much about it right now because of the way the game went. …. But at the end of the day, it’s just another thing that cements you as one of the best players to ever play in the NFL.”
“That’s the last thing that I care about right now,” Travis Kelce replied.
“I know, but you will,” Jason Kelce said. “And it’s dope.”
Travis Kelce also talked to reporters in the Chiefs locker room after his team’s loss on Sunday.
“We haven’t played that bad all year,” he said.
At the same time, he noted the Chiefs’ persistence.
“This team is going to fight until the end forever, and you saw that,” he said. “Even with the score late, we’re always going to fight.”
