The plot of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie might be one of today’s biggest movie mysteries, but recently released on-set photos have given us at least one clue about the star-studded live-action production: There will be Rollerblading. While Margot Robbie’s fluoro, Jazz-printed look is most likely a nod to this intensely ’90s edition of the Mattel doll, we were most curious about the bright pink-and-yellow skates themselves.
It turns out that though they look like relics you’d find in a box with your mom’s old aerobics equipment, the skates are from Impala, a Melbourne-based brand we’ve dubbed among the best for beginners. Like me, our resident skate expert Dominique Pariso correctly guessed that they were the Lightspeed inlines based on the front buckle and distinctive sloped silhouette of the ankle. In an email to the Strategist, a spokesperson for the brand confirmed that these were indeed Impalas customized to match the costumes for Barbie.
While the bespoke colorway isn’t for sale, the skates do come in a more muted version called “Fairy Floss,” which is reminiscent of a Dreamhouse play set, and a flame-emblazoned print to channel Dancing Fire Barbie. Just remember to follow Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s example and pair them with matching knee pads.
