Everyone seems to have a different work-from-home uniform. Some wear sweatpants, others swear by leggings, and still others prefer slacks worthy of Shiv Roy. As for me, I’ve worn a onesie almost every day for the last two months.
Earlier this year, I watched Taylor Swift’s Netflix documentary Miss Americana. In the film, the singer is self-isolating from the public while wearing a pink Free People’s Just Because Onesie. As soon as it became clear that I, too, would be self-isolating from the public, I bought one for myself.
The Just Because Onesie has everything I could need — it’s machine washable, has pockets, and, unlike the onesies of my childhood, does not have a hundred snaps. (In fact, it has none.) And it wasn’t just Swift who convinced me to buy it; this garment, which has more in common with footie pajamas than a proper jumpsuit, has earned hundreds of glowing reviews, all along the lines of “PLEASE NEVER QUIT MAKING THIS!” No wonder it sold out multiple times over the last couple of months.
The fit is billowy and oversized, but because it cinches at the ankles and wrists, it’s surprisingly flattering. I don’t need to tell you how comfortable it is — why else would one wear a onesie? — but it’s worth mentioning how versatile it is. More put-together than sweats or PJs, I wear it for working, napping, and puzzling. The deep V-neckline even makes it Zoom-date-appropriate. I get compliments every time I wear it outdoors, albeit from six feet away, and several of my friends have purchased their own after seeing it on me.
Though I initially balked at the $118 price tag, which seemed like a lot to spend on loungewear, this onesie has overdelivered on its cost-per-wear. In fact, I’m now awaiting the moment Free People restocks it in more colors (and maybe, if I’m lucky, a sleeveless version for summer).
