If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hair spray and the electric toothbrush. We asked actor Heather Morris — who’s the executive producer, director, and writer of the new scripted podcast series The Bystanders — about her “travel uniform” jumpsuit, hydrating facial bar soap, and favorite midday pick-me-up drink.
I’ve been trying to remove plastic from my beauty routine for a while. It has spawned some interesting questions about why the beauty industry hasn’t pushed to remove it sooner. I was shopping around for facial bars and actually tried Neutrogena’s before this. That one stripped my face, and I find this Peach Not Plastic bar really hydrating, but it doesn’t leave my skin oily. It also doesn’t break me out. I have really sensitive skin and don’t just break out in pimples. I get those deep ones if my skin isn’t super-happy. This is the only facial bar that works for me.
I’m actually going to the beach today, and I just put this on. I am aging a bit and feel like this smooths things out and makes my face a little brighter. You can definitely sense there’s SPF in it, but it’s still lightweight and you get that coverage from it. I usually add a pump of bronzer with it, too.
I actually stole this from one of the creators of The Bystanders podcast, Ash Lendzion. I was like, “Ash, I don’t know if you keep your fragrance close and dear to you as a secret, but I need to know what scent you’re wearing.” She told me, and now I get so many compliments on it all the time. I bought the 0.5 fluid ounce one a year ago and I just bought a new one the other day. It’s lasted me that long. It’s got sandalwood, cedar wood, nutmeg, and amber wood. It sounds like a pretty masculine scent — which I sometimes describe myself as masc or tomboy-ish — but it still feels feminine. It’s a nice blend.
Coconut oil is just one ingredient, so hydrating, and so versatile. I use mine for moisturizing my body primarily at night. That way, it soaks in and I wake up really hydrated. I also use it for my hair because I tend to get really dry ends. I just put a little bit in my hair and comb it through. I’ve been using it for so long that I don’t think I could ever go back to regular lotion filled with fragrances, a bunch of extra parabens, and all that stuff. Nope, I’m good with my coconut oil.
I teach dance, so I’m constantly traveling. I try not to check a bag, and I love my terracotta Monos carry-on bag. The color’s very neutral, and the case cleans really easily. I’ve had mine for four years. I think I came across their ads on Instagram. The brand has a newer model with a laptop section, but I haven’t updated mine since it hasn’t broken.
Reformation tries to source and make their clothes locally, so a lot of their stuff is done in downtown Los Angeles. I was doing an Earth Day television appearance promoting some products recently, and I wanted to wear sustainable clothing. Reformation was the first brand that popped up for me that was easy to obtain but also pretty local. I love their dress designs, and I always travel in this jumpsuit. It’s linen, so it’s super-breathable and easy, and I love that oatmeal color. It’s the perfect travel uniform.
I am obsessed with this ’90s look Nike has invested in these last two or three years. It’s so nostalgic for me. I love these so much, and they’re like my everyday sneakers. I wear them with a crew sock to give it more of that ’90s look. I think it’s super-fun. I have these and a pair that’s orange-y tan with cheetah print. And Nike does a shoe-recycling program, so I love reinvesting in that.
Not to bash any products, but I’m not a Stanley Cup lover. I don’t like the straw aspect because I like to make sure my water bottle’s spill proof. I love the Hydro Flask’s retractable spout. It’s easy. The bottle itself is super-durable too. I got mine about six or seven months ago, and I thought I lost it. I was so bummed and ended up getting a cheap, easy one that I ended up losing. I was like, Oh God, I’m not doing anything good for the environment. Then, my Hydro Flask showed up in my son’s backpack, and I was like, Yes! It came back to me. I need this, otherwise I forget to drink water.
I love a Diet Coke. I can’t do regular Coke. I used to when I was younger, but I don’t love it now. I try not to drink a ton of coffee, and so midday when I want a pick-me-up, I need a Diet Coke. The minis are the perfect size. The full ones are always too much. This is the perfect amount of caffeine. I don’t have trouble falling asleep at night if I have one in the afternoon.
It took a long time to find an automatic coffee–slash–espresso maker. Most of the popular ones use primarily pods, and of course those are terrible for the environment. Even the creator of one of the more popular brands said he wishes he never invented it. I did some research for automatic coffee and espresso makers that didn’t use pods, and all the reviews weren’t great. This was the only one where all the reviews were like, “It’s so worth the money.” I love it. It’s so easy. I can control it from my phone, and it can use regular coffee beans to make espresso. And the espresso tastes perfect. It’s so good. I love waking up to a shot of espresso.
