For better or for worse, as Strategist editors and writers, we cannot turn off our shopping brains. With “Saw Something, Said Something,” we’ll be writing about the tiniest of details that have caught our eye — status toothpaste in the background of Lizzo’s TikTok, a plant so rare it’s called a Birkin, or a specific face cream in a Roy sibling’s medicine cabinet.
Supreme Court confirmation hearings are often staid affairs, but Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s has been full of outbursts (from senators) — and bursts of color. Jackson has been wearing shades of indigo, vermillion, and cobalt to answer questions about her long track record, while her youngest daughter, Leila, chose a lavender pantsuit for the first day of hearings. Her husband, Patrick Graves Jackson, meanwhile, has shown his support by sitting right behind her — and by donning multiple pairs of bright, patriotic socks, no doubt a nod to the historic nature of her nomination. (Ketanji Brown Jackson, if confirmed, would become the first Black woman to sit on the highest court in the land.)
Being the obsessives we are — I mean, we did try to find Steve Kornacki’s election-night khakis — we went on the hunt for Jackson’s hosiery. Surprisingly, they’re not from a statusy brand or even a newer start-up. What we believe to be the exact ones he’s wearing are from a relatively little-known brand called Hsell, available on Amazon. Each pair in the pack of four features the illustrated face of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John F. Kennedy, or Abraham Lincoln (the last of which we haven’t seen him in yet) in a Powerpuff Girls–esque color scheme that’s popped against Jackson’s otherwise neutral outfits.
He isn’t the only fan, as these have racked up more than 1,300 hyperenthuiastic reviews so far, and Strategist senior editor Simone Kitchens owns a similar version with former president Obama’s face on them. If you want to get really official, there’s a set with presidents only (with George Washington replacing Franklin). Or go for something less political — there’s a pack with famous art prints, including Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. Either way, these will get more compliments than a Hanes crew sock ever could.
