The blunt-talking governor of New Jersey is also pretty good at using evasive language when it suits him, keeping his options open for a long time, as we saw during his laborious decision not to run for president. Eventually, Chris Christie said, “I have a commitment to New Jersey that I simply will not abandon.” Unless Mitt Romney picks him to be the GOP’s vice-presidential candidate! Maybe. But probably not. Sort of?
Romney’s not even the nominee yet, Christie cautioned today on Fox News. The governor won’t definitely say no, but he will say that he’s not even really thinking about it at this point. “I think it’s presumptuous to do that,” Christie said. “Running for president, that’s my decision and Mary Pat’s decision alone. VP is the decision of only one person — whoever the nominee of your party is. The fact is if Gov. Romney comes to me and wants to talk to me about that, we’ll have a full conversation about it and then Mary Pat and I will make that decision about what we want to do with our future.”
But while playing down his own national ambitions, Christie was more than happy to predict the election: “I think if you fast forward the tape to a year from now it’s going to be President-elect Romney and some other VP-elect and Chris Christie as the Governor of New Jersey.”
