Republican leaders have sent out a clear message that, as the immigration debate goes on, they would really appreciate it if their members could please try their best to keep the racist outbursts to an absolute bare-minimum level. They seem not to have taken to it kindly when Representative Steve King announced, “For [every DREAMer] who’s a valedictorian, there’s another 100 out there that — they weigh 130 pounds and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert. Those people would be legalized with the same act.” John Boehner dutifully castigated King’s comments as “deeply offensive and wrong.”
But if you take a shot at the King, you’d best not miss. And by “miss” I mean “fail to remove his larynx.” Because King came back on the House floor today to defend himself in an epic, world-historical speech, beginning with the origins of human civilization and continuing on through the Greeks, the Romans, the Founding Fathers, and, finally, the present era of melon-calved Latino drug-smuggling youth:
Having read King’s remarks, his point is that our civilization is built on Truth, and King is being blackballed because he told it. Americans had “denied the facts” because of “emotionalism.” What are these hard, cold facts? Do you want to know? Can you handle the truth? Because here it is:
Anybody that reads the paper should know, especially those that live on the border, should know that there are many, many young people coming across the border unlawfully who are smuggling drugs into the United States.
So Steve King, who falsely claimed the Dream Act would give asylum to drug-smuggling felons, and who furnished a pseudo-precise statistic about the relationship between drug smugglers and valedictorians among children whose parents brought them here illegally, says he is clearly right because drug smuggling exists. That was the sole factual objection to his statement — the critics denied that there is any such thing as drug smuggling. And now Steve King has disproved them using Truth.
