Profile
This crescent of a shop in the lobby of the New Museum offers a glossy array of mainstream and counterculture art books, as well as offbeat jewelry, glassware, and accessories. The main attraction is the eclectic collection of coffee-table books from contemporary artists, both mainstreamEd Ruscha, Murakami, and Gary Panterand counterculture tattoo and graffiti artists. You’ll find no plush armchairs here; shoppers flip through the wares while standing in front of the industrial, curving shelves. Along a back wall, niche art mags and journals like Flash Art, Art.es, Eye, and Art Asia Pacific fill clear racks beside DVDs of Other Cinema’s Experiments in Terror horror series. Other items draw attention for their originality, like Jack Pierson’s porcelain plates printed with photographs of nude men, or Mike and Maaike’s stolen jewel necklaces, depicting blurry, pixelated images of valuable jewelry printed on scored leather. More traditional souvenirs, like New Museum T-shirts, line a rack near the exit.
