New York Magazine editor-in-chief David Haskell today announced Mariam Aldhahi will take on a new role as managing editor, beginning May 31st. Aldhahi succeeds Ann Clarke who is retiring after serving in that role for 17 years, making her the longest tenured managing editor in the magazine’s 54-year history.
“It has been less than three years since Mariam joined the magazine, but she’s quickly established herself as a thoughtful and confident leader with incredible versatility,” said Haskell. “I can think of nobody better suited to fill Ann’s shoes, and to continue to tackle the challenge of managing this organization with care and agility in a rapidly evolving media landscape.”
Since 2020, Aldhahi has been the director of editorial operations for New York Magazine, where she works closely with editorial leadership to oversee all magazine operations, creates systems to make the newsroom more efficient and inclusive, and manages a range of special projects. During her tenure, Aldhahi streamlined workflows and communication across the magazine’s verticals, and supported its talent recruitment, retention, and career development efforts – including by establishing the magazine’s first professional development fund. In addition, she led the magazine’s crossword expansion strategy earlier this year, and managed the relaunch of Curbed at the magazine in 2020. In her new role, Mariam will continue to work across the magazine and its six verticals on a range of initiatives, while also overseeing the production of the biweekly print magazine.
Prior to joining the magazine, Aldhahi was managing editor of Curbed where she oversaw the brand’s daily operations and special projects.
Aldhahi succeeds Ann Clarke, who arrived from The New York Times Magazine in 2005 following Adam Moss’s hire as editor-in-chief, and quickly made herself indispensable not only as the manager of a fast-paced news operation, but as a careful reader passionately committed to ensuring New York maintained the highest journalistic standards. Clarke retires in May, 2022.
