Chloë Sevigny and Usher Cover the Cut’s ‘Fall Fashion’ Issue

Today, the Cut released its first-ever solo print issue, “Fall Fashion,” with cover stars Chloë Sevigny and Usher Raymond IV. The issue will bring readers more of what they love — features, conversation-starting essays, and outstanding fashion and beauty coverage — in time for New York Fashion Week. For the issue, Lindsay Peoples addressed readers with a letter celebrating the issue as a new chapter for the brand as she reaches her fourth year as editor-in-chief of the Cut:

“In these past 40-plus months, the team has evolved, and so too has what it means to create a modern magazine that is responsive to what women and femmes care about most and, of course, want to read. The Cut’s first solo issue is the beginning of a new chapter and was a labor of love from every editor who pored over these pages. What makes this era of the Cut exciting is more than just words on the page — it’s this team’s consistent effort to meet the moment.

“In our daily pursuit to find our way into your feeds, I often visualize my mother teaching me how to play double Dutch. As a young Black girl, I found double Dutch was cultural currency on the playground; there was something daunting about jumping in and knowing you could trip between the ropes and embarrass yourself in front of everyone. That’s how it can feel to run a magazine sometimes. There’s always going to be an endless loop of breaking news and global current events that we want to help you make sense of while balancing our desire to spark new conversations, whether around the complexity of age-gap relationships or why every nice dress costs $500 now.

“Finding the exact right timing to jump in with something to say takes the same instinct and bravery it took to leap inside those fast-moving jump ropes. And then there’s the vocal community of readers who tell us when an essay doesn’t sit well with them or how they love our inclusive point of view. All of this has been much on my mind as we envisioned ‘Fall Fashion’ and created indelible images alongside stories you’ll want to talk about in your group chats.”

Sevigny is styled by the Cut’s style director, Jessica Willis, as four of film’s most iconic besuited characters, dressed in Loewe, and photographed by Nadia Lee Cohen. The cover story is by New York’s Emily Gould. The second cover is a self-portrait shot by Usher himself, with additional photography by Stevie Dance and styling by Jessica Willis. Usher is profiled by Jazmine Hughes.

For the issue’s wide-ranging fashion and beauty coverage, Asia Milia Ware, Danya Issawi, Emilia Petrarca, Nina Frazier, Louise and Maria Thornfeldt, Jennifer G. Sullivan, Hanna Flanagan, Erin Schwartz, and Sasha Mutchnik explore the season’s trends, the best and worst celebrity beauty brands, survey over a hundred women on their beauty maintenance routines at every age, shopping as a plus-size woman, the closets of the city’s most stylish, and more.

The issue includes features by Angelina Chapin, who reports on people vying for the perfect smile with veneers, but who are instead finding pain, debt, and regret; Justine Harman exposes what happened after two scammers targeted a Malibu doctor; The Cut and New York’s fashion critic, Cathy Horyn, writes a powerful essay on aging and finding her personal style at 67; Emily Gould reflects on trying to explain to her kid why he can’t do the wildly expensive things some of his Brownstone Brooklyn classmates take for granted; and Chantal Fernandez gets a behind-the-scenes look at how luxury brands will do anything to keep a VIC — “very important client” — happy (and spending).

The Cut’s entertainment and celebrity coverage includes Ruth Madievsky’s profile of rising star Mikey Madison, who is getting awards buzz for her role as a determined stripper in Anora; Katja Vujić gets some rules for how to behave from Gilded Age star Morgan Spector; Olivia Craighead interviews Amelia Dimoldenberg as she approaches a decade of making her viral hit show Chicken Shop Date; and Cat Zhang writes on former TikTok star and emerging dance-pop musician PinkPantheress.

The Cut’s “Fall Fashion” issue will arrive in subscribers’ mailboxes beginning September 4, 2024. Readers can also pick up the issue at newsstands across New York City, including Casa Magazines, and on newsstands in London, Paris, and Milan.

To celebrate the issue, the Cut will open The Cut Cafe, a weeklong exclusive takeover of Bluestone Lane’s flagship store in Tribeca from September 6-11, 2024. In addition to a signature coffee and the Kahlúa x Absolut Espresso Martini, fans who visit The Cut Cafe and who are not yet subscribers can receive a free three-month subscription to New York Magazine. The Cut Cafe is located at 109 West Broadway, New York, NY, and will be open from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. from September 6-11. In addition, on September 9, 2024, the Cut’s Lindsay Peoples and Old Navy’s chief creative officer, Zac Posen, will host a blowout NYFW party with special performances at Webster Hall in celebration of the “Fall Fashion” issue and Posen’s launch of the Old Navy ‘94 Reissue capsule collection as part of their 30th anniversary.
