Last week, in an interview with Reuters, Ikea’s chief executive Torbjörn Lööf revealed that the company will start experimenting with selling its products through third-party retailers, like Amazon, in 2018. Overjoyed by the news of not having to schlep to Red Hook or put relationships on the line while deciding between credenzas in a glorified labyrinth, some people started searching for Ikea on Amazon, only to be pleasantly surprised that lots of Ikea products were already there and available on Prime.
But how? Did they surprise everyone and start early? We reached out to Ikea who had a media-relations contact confirm that the products were not actually coming from the company directly: “Regarding how the products ended up on Amazon, we don’t really have any comment to that other than that it is possible to resell Ikea products as long as the trademark is not misused.”
So the truth is that these Ikea products are on Amazon, and have actually been on Amazon for a while, but are sold through online resellers, who’ll often up-charge the product, as resellers do. It’s just that now people started to notice.
So now that the word is out, we decided to dig through what’s already been hidden in the masses of Amazon to pull together some of our Ikea favorites that require little to no setup, and that are actually similar in price (think about a $10 difference) to what you’ll get from the brand directly. Plus, you’re getting that free Prime shipping compared to Ikea’s minimum $10 fee.
