Few things cement a famous person’s celebrity status like throwing out the first pitch at a Major League Baseball game. And because it’s not a red carpet but a sartorially casual event, it’s also a chance to get to know more about said famous person’s personal style. In this case, actress and writer Ayo Edebiri has shown us an extremely good and easy-to-replicate way to make jeans and sneakers look special. When I saw the photos of her standing on the pitcher’s mound at Boston’s Fenway Park, I immediately pinched and spread my fingers to zoom in on her dark-wash wide-leg jeans and white high-tops. The sneakers were easy to identify. They are, of course, classic white Converse All Stars — a clever matching color palette for her red-and-white Red Sox jersey.
But the jeans were a bit more mysterious to me. They are high-waisted and wide without looking like trousers or sailor pants. In fact, the legs are a bit twisty or barrelled in shape. I was torn because I know Edebiri loves fashion, including Thom Browne and Rodarte, but the jeans almost looked as if they could be from Everlane. This made the mystery even more irresistible, and I dropped a link to her Instagram post in the Strategist team’s Slack channel to see what the rest of the editors and writers thought. Could they be Levi’s? I wondered. But the lack of a leather tag on the back waistband corrected me of that idea.
Then senior editor Simone Kitchens, a connoisseur of affordable but totally fashionable denim, chimed in to say she was 100 percent certain they are from Uniqlo. Specifically, she said, they are the sold-out dark-blue-wash curved jeans from the Uniqlo x Lemaire collection. “I’m very confident those are the jeans,” she said, explaining that she owned the same pair but sold them because the very high rise on her long torso just wasn’t that comfortable. “I went back and looked at my resale pictures and they’re identical,” she said. According to Kitchens, it’s the button “that goes in in the middle” and the denim wash that make her so sure they are the same jeans. I went looking for the jeans on a few resale sites and quickly found a pair on Depop. They are the exact pair Edebiri wore, just in a different wash. And though the dark wash isn’t available at Uniqlo, the jeans are still available in other colors including dark gray, black, beige, and select sizes of white denim. It’s a different look in beige or black for sure, but the fit and shape are exactly the same so they’ll look just as good with a pair of Chucks and, if you want, a baseball tee, like the ones we wrote about recently in the Secret Strategist newsletter.
[Editor’s note: The previously sold out dark blue wash has been restocked at Uniqlo. But they’re likely going to sell out again fast. So if you want a pair, don’t wait.]
